Cleaning & Care Instructions for Mind Media NeXus Systems, Sensors & Caps

Proper cleaning and handling of NeXus systems, sensors, electrodes, and caps is essential for:

  • Reliable signal quality and measurements

  • Long-term durability of hardware

  • User safety and hygiene

  • Preserving product warranty

We increasingly observe damage, contamination, and premature wear caused by incorrect cleaning methods, misuse of consumables, and poor hygiene practices. This document defines mandatory cleaning and handling guidelines for all Mind Media NeXus systems.

Failure to follow these instructions will result in warranty being void.

Scope

These instructions apply to:

  • All Mind Media NeXus systems

  • EEG, EMG, ECG, EOG and other NeXus sensors

  • Electrodes (Ag/AgCl, passive, active)

  • EEG caps (fabric, elastic, and integrated electrode caps)

  • Sensor cables and connectors

General Hygiene & Handling Principles (Mandatory)

  1. Clean after every use
Sensors, electrodes, and caps must be cleaned immediately after each session.

  2. Never immerse electronics
Sensors, amplifiers, cables, or connectors must never be submerged in liquid.

  3. Use only approved cleaning agents
Harsh chemicals permanently damage plastics, coatings, electrodes, and seals.

  4. Handle consumables correctly
Conductive paste and gel must be applied hygienically and sparingly.

  5. Prevent cross-contamination
Equipment used on multiple clients must be cleaned between users without exception.

Approved Cleaning Materials

Allowed

  • Mild liquid soap (pH-neutral)

  • Warm water (not hot)

  • Soft cloth or microfiber cloth

  • Soft brush (e.g. toothbrush) for caps only

  • Disposable wooden or plastic spatula/spoon for paste application

NOT Allowed (Strictly Prohibited)

  • Alcohol or alcohol-based wipes or solutions (unless explicitly stated in the official Mind Media IFU for the specific product)

  • Acetone

  • Bleach or chlorine-based cleaners

  • Hydrogen peroxide

  • Ammonia-based cleaners

  • Abrasive sponges or brushes

  • Ultrasonic cleaners

  • Dishwashers or washing machines

  • Sprays directly applied to electronics

Use of prohibited materials voids warranty immediately.

Cleaning Instructions by Component

1. NeXus System (Main Unit)

Never immerse or spray liquid directly onto the system.

Procedure:

  1. Power off and disconnect the system

  2. Wipe the exterior with a lightly damp (not wet) cloth

  3. If needed, use a cloth with mild soap solution

  4. Dry completely with a clean cloth

Important:

  • Do not allow moisture near ports or connectors

  • Do not open the enclosure

2. Sensors & Cables

Sensors contain sensitive electronics and seals.

Procedure:

  1. Remove visible paste or gel immediately after use

  2. Wipe sensor surface with a damp cloth

  3. Use a small amount of mild soap if needed

  4. Wipe again with clean water

  5. Dry thoroughly before storage

Disinfection notice:
Mind Media does not publicly authorize the use of chemical disinfectants (including alcohol-based products) for NeXus systems, sensors, electrodes, cables, or caps unless explicitly stated in the official Instructions for Use (IFU) for the specific product.

When enhanced hygiene is required (e.g. multi-user or clinical environments), cleaning must be performed using water and mild soap only, followed by thorough drying. For additional guidance, contact Mind Media Support.

3. Electrodes (Ag/AgCl and Others)

Electrodes are wear components and must be treated carefully.

Correct use:

  • Apply conductive paste only onto the electrode surface

  • Use a clean spoon or spatula

  • Never dip electrodes or sensors into a paste container

Strictly forbidden:

  • Inserting electrodes or sensors directly into paste jars

  • Reusing contaminated paste

Cleaning procedure:

  1. Remove paste immediately after use

  2. Rinse electrode with warm water

  3. Use mild soap if residue remains

  4. Rinse thoroughly

  5. Dry completely

Overuse warning:Electrodes have a limited lifespan. Excessive reuse, aggressive cleaning, or poor hygiene accelerates degradation and affects signal quality.

4. EEG Caps

Procedure after each use:

  1. Rinse cap with warm water

  2. Gently clean with mild soap

  3. Use a soft brush only if needed

  4. Rinse thoroughly

  5. Air-dry completely (do not use heat)

Important:

  • Do not wring or stretch caps

  • Do not tumble dry

  • Do not expose to direct sunlight or heaters

Conductive Paste & Gel – Proper Use (Critical)

Correct Application

  • Always use a clean, disposable spoon or spatula

  • Apply paste only to the electrode or cap opening

  • Close paste container immediately after use

Incorrect Use (Observed & Prohibited)

  • Dipping electrodes or sensors into paste containers

  • Using contaminated paste

  • Leaving paste to dry on electrodes or sensors

Improper paste handling leads to:

  • Contamination of consumables

  • Corrosion of electrodes

  • Permanent sensor damage

Storage Guidelines

  • Ensure all components are clean and dry before storage

  • Store in a clean, dry environment

  • Avoid high humidity and extreme temperatures

  • Prevent cable bending or strain

Warranty & Liability Statement (Important)

Mind Media warranties cover manufacturing and material defects only.

The following will void warranty immediately:

  • Failure to clean equipment after use

  • Use of prohibited cleaning agents

  • Immersion of sensors, cables, or systems in liquid

  • Improper handling of conductive paste or gels

  • Contamination or corrosion due to poor hygiene

  • Excessive or improper reuse of electrodes

Mind Media reserves the right to refuse repair or replacement if damage is caused by misuse, improper cleaning, or negligence.

Training & Compliance

These instructions are intended for:

  • End users

  • Clinicians and practitioners

  • Training institutions

  • Service and support teams

Proper care is part of professional use of NeXus systems. If you are unsure about correct handling or cleaning, contact Mind Media Support before proceeding.
